AOC's Partial Limb Dog Prosthetic is designed to aid in the relief of the weight bearing leg and suspend off of a residual limb. Our partial limb dog leg prosthetic can be designed for either the front or rear leg.
For a front leg prosthetic the amputation must be at least 4 inches below the elbow. If the amputation is above the elbow, please consider our Dog Full Limb Prosthetic. If the amputation is less than 4 inches below the elbow, please contact us at care@aocpet.com to discuss options.
A back leg prosthetic the amputation must be at least 2 inches below the hock. If the amputation is above the hock, please consider our Haute Wheels Pet Wheelchair. If the amputation is less than 2 inches below the hock, please contact us at care@aocpet.com to discuss options.
Please keep in mind that the break-in period and time of each increment will depend on your pet's diagnosis and overall acceptance of the prosthetic.
When casting for a prosthetic it is important that you capture the distal end of the stump. The best way to do that is to keep the cut strip above the distal end of the stump about ½ of an inch, this will help allow you to capture the distal end in full.
If you have any concerns please send pictures and videos to care@aocpet.com.
Purchases of our partial limb prosthetics include a free casting kit, which you will use before we begin fabricating the prosthetic itself. Once you have cast your dog's leg - or legs if you are ordering a pair of prosthetics - you will mail us the casts. At that point we craft your prosthetic order based on the cast of your dog's leg, and then send the prosthetic back to you.
Please contact us and we will work with you to find the fit! The hook and loop straps give you some freedom to adjust the prosthetic yourself. Depending on the issues with the fit, we may instruct you to ship it back to us for more extensive modification.
Please note it is imperative that you take an accurate cast of your dog's leg in order for the prosthetic to have the best possible fit. Please refer to our casting directions and be sure that you are familiar with them before attempting a casting.
Refurbishing your dog's prosthetic is easy. Strap replacements are free within the first 90 days of your purchase if you order and replace them yourself. We offer various methods for refurbishing your prosthetic depending on what needs to be done. You can order new Straps (1 inch or 1.5 inch) and Pads to replace on your own. If your dog's prosthetic needs more than just the straps and pads to be replaced, please contact us at care@aocpet.com for the prosthetic refurbishment process.
There is a two-week break-in period where you will gradually increase the time your dog wears their Partial Limb Prosthetic by 30 minute increments. Once this period is complete, you may leave the prosthetic on your dog for up to 14 hours a day. However, be sure to remove the prosthetic when your dog is resting, this will prevent irritation and allow their leg to air out. Check for any signs of irritation and/or swelling after removing the prosthetic.
Please remove the prosthetic before your dog goes to bed at night.
Yes! However, give your dog a few days of using the prosthetic before they attempt stairs. If they seem to be adjusting well to the prosthetic and moving comfortably, you should be able to introduce stairs. Be sure to supervise their first few attempts.
Once we receive the cast of your dog's leg, it takes 2-4 weeks to fabricate the prosthetic.
We offer free 5-7 business day ground shipping in the US for both the casting kit and custom prosthetic, as well as 2 Business Day or Overnight shipping options for an additional charge. If you select an expedited shipping option, we will ship the casting kit to you based on that option. Once we receive the cast of your dog's leg and fabricate the Custom prosthetic, we will ship that using the same option you selected at checkout.
The difficulty of casting will depend on your dog; more anxious or badly injured dogs may find the process more distressing. It is recommended that you perform the process with at least 3-4 people depending on your dog's energy level.
Detailed instructions on how to cast are included in the casting kit. We can walk you or your veterinarian through the casting process, so please contact us with questions or concerns before you begin casting your dog's leg. We also offer FREE on-site casting at our Arden Hills, Minnesota location.
Dog Leg Prosthetic - Partial Limb
We are really happy , pirata can go on walks like the others . The cast was perfect on the size
After buying a prosthetic from a different company that ended up being horrible and harmful, I am so glad I ended up choosing a prosthetic from Animal Ortho Care.
The service has been wonderful (I have been bugging them with a LOT of questions) and they have answered all of it. The prosthetic looks great and Maggie seems to really like it too. We are still in the "getting used to it" phase, so might need some small adjustments, but I have no worries that AOC will help us out if need be.
So can definitely recommend Animal Ortho Care, and I am even considering getting Maggie a second prosthetic! (don't want Maggie to be without one if the one we have now needs adjustments or parts needs to be replaced)
Hey Trine,
Thank you for taking the time to write a review and provide your experience with working on getting the prosthetic. Looks like we are still working towards the final goal!
Respectfully,
AOC
Have not received it yet
Phryne lost part of her foot when she was a baby. She doesnt let that slow her down but she does get tired easily. This was so worth the time and price. Her life will only go up from here!
Hey Katie,
Thank you for much for the update on Phryne. We love that we can be apart of her journey and provide a tool to give her an increase on quality of life! We wish you and Phryne all the best.
Respectfully,
AOC
My dog is small (15 pounds) so the prosthetic is also small. She is missing about three inches off her front paw. I was hoping the prosthetic would give her the ability to use the stairs. As it is, there is no "bounce" in the prosthetic and, therefore, she can't wear it in the house because she can't jump off the couch with it on. She also can't (won't) run on cement. The only improvement with this device is that it gives her improved ability to run on grass.
For such an expensive four inches of plaster, I wish the company had given me the option of talking to the individual actually making the device to better understand our needs rather than relying on a short questionnaire.
Hi Rebecca,
We are so sorry to hear the device isn't as useful as you thought. I do see that Customer Care has already reached out to you to get pictures from so we can help assess overall fit. Prosthetics are very customized for the animal so the design isn't always going to be the same from one animal to another. Some dogs can jump and do stairs with partial limbs but for some dogs they may not actually want to once the device is on. Customer Care can help assess your specific situation once we gather a bit more info from you. We are happy though that is has allowed your dog to be more active and run on grass! Thank you for taking the time to write us a review.
Best,
Animal Ortho Care
Our dog, Peg, was born missing a front paw. Hopping is all she has ever known, and she got around really well, but when you're a Golden Retriever, that much weight and strain on one front limb takes its toll. We had to find some way to help her as she, at 6 years old, has arthritis in her front ankle and when she overdoes it she can't put her front paw on the ground at all. We ordered a prosthetic for her and while I was concerned that she would have difficulty adjusting to walking, she has done great. We had to first get her to trust weight on the artificial limb, but once she figured that out, her natural instinct took over and she was good to go.
We got the prosthetic in the estimated time frame and when we felt it needed a slight adjustment we were able to ship it back and get it returned quickly. I do wish there was more community support and suggestions for things on how to teach the dog to walk and go up and down stairs, how to make sure the prosthetic is a good fit, and how to make sure the limb isn't too tight or too loose.
Overall, I'm very happy with it. Peg can go on longer walks without getting overly tired or sore and it takes strain away from her good leg as well which is very important.
Great service! Thank you!
This prosthetic has changed Olaf’s life. After having sepsis and losing a hind leg and all of his toes on his other hind leg, he couldn’t even walk. He is an active pup that loves to play with other dogs and was always so sad watching him try to run on his two front legs. This prosthetic has helped him enjoy life more and now he can run with the rest of the dogs, swim, and even goes on nature trails. He is so much happier and so thankful for this company for making this happen for him!
The company offered a great service. After trying a week, we noticed the prosthetic needed some adjustments. We contacted the company. They responded immediately. We especially wanted to thank Angela Boncz for her wonderful service. After she made the adjustment, she sent back the prosthetic second day. Thank you! Angela. The prosthetic changed my dog's life. She wears it everyday, running and chasing squirrels. No words can express our thanks to Animal Ortho Care.
